Half a roll of photographic film, unedited. Eighteen photographs of the woods, and it’s just the woods, really

A 35mm camera forgotten in a closet for eighteen years, a roll of your cheapest film, please, just to test if the camera works, two afternoon walks through the woods, between summer storms.

If on Instagram I treated all images as a "final product," here I want to talk —or show—more about the process. The woods theme might feel repetitive for those who’ve followed me before; since 2020, I’ve dedicated part of the year to these photographs. Usually, they’re in color. Here, it’s half a roll of black-and-white film, with the images presented in the order they were taken, unedited. Instagram’s algorithm would punish me for two months for such audacity; here, I’m free.

The film is Fomapan 400, made in the Czech Republic by FOMA. It has two peculiarities: despite the "PAN" in its name (from panchromatic, meaning sensitive to all visible colors), it has low sensitivity to blues and greens and an increased response to reds and near-infrared. Skin tones radiate light, while the greens of the woods darken. Additionally, it’s highly prone to halation, a diffuse haze around intense points of light. This is clearly visible in the first photograph above and lends this series of images a golden aura.

A problem with my camera shows through on some photographs. There’s a light leak, likely around the edge of the back cover, which caused white spots.

The photographs on the other half of the roll are of my family. I’ll keep those out of here. They’ll appreciate me for that.

Eles agradecem.
