Experiencing public space at SESC Interlagos – A visual essay exploring the dynamic relationship between people, nature, and infrastructure, highlighting the vibrancy of this cultural landmark in São Paulo.

Once a month, I will revisit a photographic essay from my archive, providing commentary and expanding on the context in which it was produced and published.

In 2018, I received a call from Nelson Kon, a dear teacher and one of the most important architectural photographers in Brazil, inviting me to a meeting. He had a project in mind that would bring together a dozen photographers to document various SESC São Paulo units – in the capital, the metropolitan region, and eventually, the interior of the state.

The meeting took place at SESC Belenzinho, at the institution's headquarters, and was coordinated by photographer Thales Trigo. At that moment, someone jokingly said that a "cartel of architectural photographers" was being formed. The project took time to materialize, and with the onset of the pandemic, it had to be postponed, extending beyond the expected timeline.

I was assigned to photograph SESC Interlagos, and finally, in November 2022, the opportunity arose to do so during the summer. Capturing the space in full activity meant documenting the public in moments of leisure. The visits were scheduled over three sunny weekends, ensuring vibrant images of the green areas, pools, and sports activities, all filled with people enjoying the space.

SESC Interlagos is a project based on the "SESC Campo" concept, created by architects Alberto Botti and Marc Rubin, from the Botti Rubin Arquitetos firm. Located in the far south of São Paulo, on the banks of the Billings Reservoir, it stands out as one of the few free public facilities in the region, capable of accommodating a large and diverse audience.

Initially, I was unable to present this essay in full on Instagram. The number of images was too high, and the platform did not allow for a cohesive arrangement. As a result, the essay always appeared in a fragmented way. This time, I have gathered the most significant images here, showcasing the experience of this incredible space.

Uma vez por mês, retomarei um ensaio fotográfico do meu arquivo, comentando e ampliando o contexto em que foi produzido e publicado.

Em 2018, recebi uma ligação de Nelson Kon, querido professor e um dos fotógrafos de arquitetura mais importantes do Brasil, convidando-me para uma reunião. Ele tinha em mente um projeto que reuniria uma dezena de fotógrafos para registrar diversas unidades do SESC São Paulo – na capital, na região metropolitana e, eventualmente, no interior do estado.

A reunião aconteceu no SESC Belenzinho, na sede da instituição, e contou com a coordenação do também fotógrafo Thales Trigo — naquele momento, alguém brincou que ali nascia um "cartel de fotógrafos de arquitetura". O projeto demorou a se concretizar e, com a chegada da pandemia, precisou ser adiado, estendendo-se além do previsto.

Fiquei responsável por fotografar o SESC Interlagos e, finalmente, em novembro de 2022, surgiu a oportunidade de fazê-lo durante o verão. Para capturar o espaço em plena atividade, era essencial registrar o público em momentos de lazer. As visitas foram planejadas para três finais de semana ensolarados, garantindo imagens vibrantes das áreas verdes, das piscinas e das atividades esportivas, todas ocupadas por pessoas aproveitando o espaço.

O SESC Interlagos é um projeto baseado no conceito "clube de campo", cuja sede social foi projetada pelos arquitetos Alberto Botti e Marc Rubin, do escritório Botti Rubin Arquitetos. Localizado no extremo sul de São Paulo, às margens da represa Billings, destaca-se como um dos poucos equipamentos públicos gratuitos da região, capaz de receber um grande e diversificado público.

Inicialmente, não consegui exibir esse ensaio por completo no Instagram. O número de imagens era muito alto, e a plataforma não permitia organizá-las de forma coesa. Assim, o ensaio sempre apareceu de maneira fragmentada. Desta vez, reuni aqui as principais imagens que mostram a fruição desse espaço incrível.
