35th Bienal de São Paulo – choreographies of the impossible
I was overjoyed to receive the news that the exhibition design project for the 35th São Paulo Biennial – Choreographies of the Impossible, developed by the vão office, was recognized with the APCA – São Paulo Association of Art Critics – award.
At the time, I was invited by vão and the Biennial Foundation to create the photographs and a short film for the project. While the photos gained some visibility, the video remained on the fringes of social media algorithms. Horizontal, slow, and devoid of “dance trends,” it was clear that it wasn’t suited to the platform. I take this opportunity to share it here, where it can be displayed more appropriately.
The video draws inspiration from the exhibition journey proposed by the curators and architects. The sequence of images leads the viewer along a path that subverts the usual logic of experiencing the Biennial pavilion: starting on the first floor, ascending to the third, and then descending to the second. The closure of the open span is explored throughout this movement.
Once again, I employ the long-exposure technique I used in the film for the previous edition of the Biennial. Each frame is exposed for a quarter of a second (as opposed to the standard 1/25s), yet the time unfolds in real-time. This is not slow motion, despite the feeling of languid movement. The fixed-camera shots emphasize the photographic quality of the video, grounding the artworks while dissolving the gestures, identities, and movements of the visitors.
I would also like to congratulate the other awardees in the Architecture category of this edition, with special mention to Helena Ayoub Silva (my professor at FAUUSP, with whom I was a rather disastrous student) and the collective Agência TPBA, C.L.U.B.E., and Pianca Arquitetura, authors of the Border Crossing installation for the 5th Edition of the Biennale Svizzera del Territorio “Back to the Future,” held in Lugano, Switzerland.

Recebi com grande alegria a notícia de que o projeto expográfico da 35ª Bienal de São Paulo – Coreografias do Impossível, desenvolvido pelo escritório vão, foi reconhecido com o prêmio da APCA – Associação Paulista de Críticos de Artes.
Na época, fui convidado pelo vão e pela Fundação Bienal para realizar as fotografias e um curta-metragem do projeto. Enquanto as fotos tiveram alguma visibilidade, o vídeo permaneceu à margem dos algoritmos das redes sociais. Horizontal, introspectivo e sem “dancinhas”, era evidente que não estava na plataforma mais adequada. Aproveito os novos ares para divulgá-lo aqui, onde pode ser exibido de maneira mais apropriada.
O registro em vídeo segue o percurso expográfico proposto pelos curadores e arquitetos. O sequenciamento das imagens conduz por um caminho que inverte a lógica habitual de fruição do pavilhão da Bienal, indo do primeiro ao terceiro andar para, de lá, descer ao segundo. O fechamento do vão livre é explorado ao longo desse deslocamento.
Repito aqui o artifício de longa exposição que havia empregado no filme da edição anterior da Bienal. Cada quadro é exposto por um quarto de segundo (em vez do habitual 1/25s), embora o tempo transcorra em ritmo real. Não se trata de câmera lenta, apesar da sensação de morosidade. Os planos em câmera fixa reforçam o caráter fotográfico do vídeo, ancorando as obras de arte enquanto dissolvem gestos, identidades e movimentos dos visitantes.
